Question!

StellaJervis - 7/8/2015 at 08:57 AM

I'm thinking about creating a Music playlist for when I write. Any suggestions? Do you all listen to music when you write? What do you like to listen to?

Skwerly - 7/8/2015 at 12:59 PM

I can't listen to music with lyrics so I listen to odd things like trap or classical.

Thanks for your reply! What do you mean by "trap"?

Skwerly - 7/9/2015 at 12:25 PM

Generally, trap is kind of like dub/dance without many words and features a buildup, a drop/chorus, at least one breakdown, then another drop or two. It’s known for hard-hitting big bass, driving beats, and strange, strange instruments and horn hits.

Here’s a chill favorite of mine:

and a harder hitting example of actual trap:

There are waaaay better examples out there, I just dropped a couple quickies. Anyhow, you get the gist.

The popular song “Turn Down for What” is trap, mainstream style but the type I really dig.

Only instrumentals for me as well. Or sounds from ambient-mixer.com. Sometimes I stick on symphonic metal. Sometimes those meditation/relaxation things you find on YouTube that go on for 3 hours.

No music for me of any kind. I do like music, just not when I am writing.

Sometimes I can do music, but not if it has a catchy tune or melody. I can't do any with words at all. If I do, I start signing and start typing the words I'm singing.

Don’t have a playlist to share (iTunes? YouTube?).

I do love rock, Alt. Americana, and anything really.

I don’t mind words.

What do you like?

Definitely instrumental. I was listening to Beats Antique for awhile but then somehow I got a little sick of it.

Thanks so much, Skwerly, for turning me onto trap! I love the North End Night Life video--especially with the beat combined with violins! swoon

I can listen only to the classical music, Mozart in particular. But I don't do it that often, it kind of mutes my own thoughts and I can't concentrate. Never try Wagner for that purpose.

I've recently found Electro Swing, a hybrid of Swing and ...well, it's difficult to pigeonhole. One of the more notable artists include:

Parov Stelar

For sustained listening I like:

because I can pick a genre and just let it play.

But I like music. Music with words, or without, and across the board -- no particular genre; music isn't for everyone, and then again neither am I.

So, there's that.
