Amazon Breakthrough Novel Writing Contest
It's about that time again. I got an email this morning with the dates and new catagories. If this doesn't get all us novel writers to finishing up
our manuscripts, I don't know what will! First prize winner gets $25,000 plus the winning novel will be published by Penguin Books. I made it to the
quarter finals last year. Note that this year they have added a YA catagory, and are accepting previously self-published novels.
Here's what they sent me:
We are pleased to announce that Amazon.com and Penguin Group (USA), are once again presenting the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award in 2010. As a past
entrant, Amazon would like to invite you back to participate again.
This unique contest brings together talented writers, reviewers and publishing experts to find and develop new voices in fiction. Visit the Amazon
Breakthrough Novel Award page to learn more information about this year's contest. We have made some exciting new changes to the contest this year;
there will be two grand prizes: one for General Fiction and one for Young Adult Fiction. Also, we are pleased to announce that previously
self-published works are eligible for the contest.
We will begin accepting manuscripts using the CreateSpace submission platform on January 25th, 2010 and submissions will be accepted through February
7th, 2010 or until we reach 10,000 submissions, whichever comes first. If you're an author with an unpublished or self-published novel waiting to be
discovered, you can sign up for important submission updates at CreateSpace, or learn how to get your entry ready for submission at http://www.amazon.com/abna .
And don't miss the 2009 Amazon Breakthrough Award Winner, James King's book Bill Warrington's Last Chance, now available for pre-order on Amazon.com.
Be forewarned, you'll need a 300 word synopsis, and a 300 word 'pitch', plus your bio.
Good luck everyone!
Admin note: edited to fix link only.

Thanks for the info, Nancy. Too bad my novel is for middle grade children not young adults.

Yep, that's it. I just googled Nancy's title and found out all the details. Penguin Group (USA) promotes a lot of great books!

WOW! Another reason why I love this board: I would never have heard of this on my own.
I won (finished) Nano 2008 and am considering polishing that thing up and sending it in. It needs a lot of work - no, you don't understand - a LOT of
work LOL! But, as writers, we shouldn't shy away from moving in with our babies for a few weeks, I guess.
THANK you for this information.
OH, and I *love* how previously "self-published" work is eligible. Read: that doesn't count anyhow, so send it on in. Aww, how cute! Hims
pubwished hims own wittle booky! Now, let's do it right LOL!.
Yea, I don't have a high opinion of self-publishing. I'm not knocking those who do it, though. Hey, whatever works! It surely isn't for me, that
much I know.
I seemed to be looking down from an immense height upon a twilit grotto, knee-deep with filth, where a white-bearded daemon swineherd drove about
with his staff a flock of fungous, flabby beasts whose appearance filled me with unutterable loathing.

Entries are to be between 50K and 150K. I have nothing like this started, and do have some other projects going, so I'll be passing, but hope they
keep it up. There's always another year!
Hey- there can be some very good reasons to self-publish... niche book, for example. Give me a break, Skwerly!

Yeah, they've been doing this for a few years now, so I'm sure it'll be up for future years too.
I'm trying to decide which, if any, of the novels I have right now should be submitted to this, but I'm pretty certain I'm planning on entering it.
thanks for the heads up Nancy - I put January 25th on my calendar!
Love and stuff,
Michy

Thanks for posting this Nancy - like some others, I don't have anything nearly ready for submission; however, it motivates me to finish my novel by
the end of 2010!

Can we enter our NaNo novels into this?
If it doesn't win, what happens?
I saw that for NaNo we got a createspace coupon for a free proof copy of the book but it looked like it was self publishing via amazon. Is it?
sorry for the questions but after doing nano, I'm feeling a little braver about entering stuff.

You can use your NaNo novel for anything you want!
Createspace offers this coupon for one free proof copy of your book - they hope you'll like it and want to order/purchase more to sell, etc, but if
you do, you run the risk of losing first publication rights. I don't think printing ONE proof copy that no one sees but you will hurt anything, so I
say go for it if you want it. But, don't let them trap you into self publishing just to see books with your name on it when what you really need to
focus on is getting a publisher to pick you up.
With the novel contest, you aren't going to put the entire novel up for EVERYONE to read. Only the behind the sceners see the entire thing. Once the
contest is over, you have the novel still, and you'll have no problems selling it elsewhere and it doesn't stay up on the site indefinitely.
So... I think it's worth the shot at it, if you have a full-length work available to put into it... I'm seriously considering it, but just don't know
which one of my novels to put up!
Love and stuff,
Michy
