Online Submissions: How to Get Started?

Hi,

So I'm currently in the process of finding the right online publishing outlets, ones that fit the genres of writing that interest me. I used Duotrope's Digest to do a search and I received a flood of publishers (87-100). I never thought there were that many ezine/ebook publishers out there!

I'm trying to swim through this sea of publishers without getting swamped. Can anyone here share their experience with online submissions? I'm mainly interested in these things:

-How you keep track of the work you submitted

-Warning signs for bad online publishers

-Making sure your writing piece fits the requested genre

I'm also interested in whether or not its a good idea to fish the same work through several publishers. I know in the big market print world this is a no no, but what about online?

Any experiences you can share are welcome :)

I use a little program called Sonar to keep track of my submissions. It's free. http://www.spacejock.com/Sonar.html - Simple but effective.

I'm no expert on submitting stuff, not having done it enough, so take what I say with a grain of salt. :)

Warning signs: no pay, very new, no results in Google, they want all rights.

Making sure your piece fits: read back issues of the mag. Read all sub guidelines.

About 'fishing' the work through several pubs. Do you mean at the same time? Most submission guidelines I've read have statement whether they have a problem with simultaneous subs or not. I personally would send a story out to one place at a time.

Thanks!

Looks like that program will help me stay organized. Keeping track of my work will be much easier now. That way I hopefully won't submit a piece to the same place twice:)

I write a note under the text of each article, short story or poem saying when and where to I have submitted it. When I receive an answer, I write another note saying accepted (where and date) or rejected (where and date).
