Tim Burton's Alice
Has anyone else seen Tim Burton's take on Alice? I just saw it, and I think it's wonderful. It was great interpretation, and who wouldn't love
Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter?
"`Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?'
`That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,' said the Cat.
`I don't much care where--' said Alice.
`Then it doesn't matter which way you go,' said the Cat.
`--so long as I get SOMEWHERE,' Alice added as an explanation.
`Oh, you're sure to do that,' said the Cat, `if you only walk long enough.'"

I hope you get to! Its wonderful! Tim Burton was very loyal to the original concept of Wonderland.

I'm seeing it on Tuesday, cannot wait. Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter is simply perfect casting but its Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, now that
is really drawing me to the film (love her). Along with the lush visuals.

I want to see it. Will have to wait until it comes out for free at the library. Surprisingly S. doesn't sound interested in it at all and we saw the
previews.

Depp is good at anything that he does but the look of that character just gives me the creeps.

The movie is one that it helps to not expect a copy of Disney's original, and to know that Alice was once a book, which I assume everyone here would,
but over half the audience seemed to have missed out on knowing.
Helena Bonham Carter was excellent in it (but when isn't she?) and I swear they subconsciously modeled Depp's look after a Finnish muscian, Ville
Valo. Valo and Depp resemble each other quite a bit, and Ville Valo has naturally gappy front teeth, and green eyes. He did a cover for Metal Hammer
magazine where he was modeled after Depp as the Mad Hatter. The resemblance is almost scary.
I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on the movie, especially if you have read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, since my friend hadn't read it, so
some of the references were lost on her.

Anyone who passed from childhood into adulthood without having read "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass" are most likely those who
never developed a desire to read.

True, Robert. My daughter isn't quite 9 years old and she has already read Alice in Wonderland.

I suppose I'm an anomaly. I never read, "Alice in Wonderland" but I've always enjoyed a good read. Come to think of it, there are a number of things
I'm surprised I missed, but seeing as I was a youngin' right when Nintendo was flooding the market with neon eye candy it's not such a mystery.
I'm wary of this movie. If anyone could do Wonderland right in modern cinema it's Tim Burton but glancing at a plot synopsis made me cringe. It's a
sequel? And Alice discovers that it's her destiny to save Underland? The Mad Hatter has a broadsword? From what I know of the original story
it sounds like a complete shift in the plot dynamics and if that's the case why not create an original IP that draws heavily from Wonderland? I never
thought I'd say this after "Charlie in the Chocolate Factory" but I'd rather have seen a reimagining than a sequel.
I should see it before I say more... So look for a rant when the DVD comes out.

I was little nervous about the movie too (I'm protective of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass), but I have to say the
plot synopsis doesn't do the movie justice.
The movie holds true to the idea that Wonderland helps Alice grow up, which was what i was most worried about not being maintained.

I haven't read them either. My library didn't have Alice in Wonderland, though I remember hunting for it and asking the librarian to help me. I wanted
to read it after seeing the Disney movie. They didn't have the book, so I just went without. There were a lot of things that are apparently "Every kid
must have....." that I missed out on.

Hmm, I suppose, as with all things, I'll reserve judgement for myself. Besides, it's unlikely I'll get through life without seeing it somewhere.
Someone is bound to be watching it while I'm near and I'll be damned if I'm not entranced by pretty colors.

Well it probably wouldn't be a problem now, because all the libraries in my town and the surrounding towns (and I think each town has at least two
libraries......35 total libraries.... although some of them are pretty small ) are on one interconnected system. If you dont mind waiting for a few
days, you can get just about any book. Unfortunately that system wasn't around then.

Haha! I just got back from seeing the flick – loved it! Fantasy worlds like that always wake up my senses, and this one was done wonderlandfully!
Two thumbs up from this here guy.
I seemed to be looking down from an immense height upon a twilit grotto, knee-deep with filth, where a white-bearded daemon swineherd drove about
with his staff a flock of fungous, flabby beasts whose appearance filled me with unutterable loathing.

Well I've seen it now, and i gotta say i was underwhelmed. To me it felt less like Wonderland and more like Narnia if anything. And i cant believe
that i am going to say this but - i have no idea what Depp was trying to do in the film with his character (and that dance at the end resulted in me
cringing). The two Queens were fantastic though.
I dont know, I think that it was not so much Tim Burton, more the person who wrote the screenplay who quite ruined it (for me). Tim did give us
amazing characters and even more amazing visuals, it was just the story itself that was poor.
But dont get me wrong, it was a very entertaining film. But it should had been renamed The Chronicles of Wonderland: The Hatter, the Queen and the
Rabbit Hole lol.

Those are two books that I've never read, personally. I never seemed able to stick with a classic like that and finish it, even if I did start to read
it.. There's a couple of other classics as well that I gave up on when I was a kid... Shame on me. lol.
I may watch the movie when it comes out on TV, but I don't know. Just depends on what mood I'm in when it comes on. I've never seen the origional,
either, other than bits and pieces.

Nah man, they should have called it Narnia in Wonderland: Aslan be Trippin' Balls. Put a lion in some oversized sun glasses and a Dr. Seuss hat, put a
bong to its mouth, and set it against a tye-die backdrop and BAM! Box office gold.
