Technical MSS question

I vaguely remember some rule about not ending a page or starting a page with one word.

This happens to me frequently simply because of the length of a sentence and/or the page break.

I find that I spend an awful lot of time trying to re-write the sentence just to avoid one word hanging off the end.

In all actuality, that one word may not even end up alone, given that the revisions, and future layout of the book will change.

Should I be worrying so much about this? Or let it slide because it probably will self-correct later?

Arrrggghhhh. Some nights I could tear out my hair.

I'd let it slide, but that's just me. :)

Until the final layout for print it seems like treading water and it is probably interrupting the flow of your writing.

Shozbot is on the right track - you need to turn on the Widow/Orphan protection in Word. BUT if you do formatting for print publication, you want that turned off, so you control where the sentences break on the page.

If this is a manuscript you're sending to an agent or publisher, the rule doesn't matter at all - there will be so many revisions it won't make a difference.

If this is a final copy of something you're going to print out, bind or convert to PDF, then you're going to want to turn on the Widow/Orphan protection and format the entire document that way and it will automatically move lines around to do that. The problem with that is each page becomes a different 'size' when you do this - for example, one page might have 40 lines and another will have 41 and then another has 42, etc.

Love and stuff,
Michy

I guess I will stop fretting about it and let it go as this is a manuscript. The publisher/editor can worry about it if/when it comes to that ;)
