Outdoor Writer Question

So... I have this article about visiting Bond Falls last week and I want to sell it. Helium doesn't really have anywhere to put it. I can post on AC and get pennies. I can post a version on Shared Reviews and get a few pennies. Seed only wants what they want. I don't belong to any other pay to write sites.

Any ideas on how to find this kind of market? I've been advised that Michigan Outdoor Writer's Assoc is no help, and it costs $60 to join, so I'm not eager to leap into that.

Laurie put a post in the General Writing section the other day titled something like 'the motherlode of places to submit', or something like that. You might go through that list. Also, if your library has a copy of Writers Marketplace you could check the listing for outdoor magazines or hiking magazines, etc. That will have the submission requirements, pay, etc. A magazine would pay better than online.

If your library doesn't have Writers Marketplace, let me know and I'll find my copy and see what is listed.

Thanks Nancy, I think the lib carries it. My copies are too old- from when I was submitting to magazines a lot, quite a long time ago now.

Actually, I should be able to find guidelines on line, once I identify some potential magazines.

I should have thought of this myself... sometimes one is just too close to a situation, eh?

Mood: Glittery, but maybe that's from paint fumes.

Not sure if this is something that might work, but...

Backpacker Magazine

The pay sounds pretty decent if it's a good fit.

Nah... Backpacker won't give this article the time of day. Much too tame. (I would submit if it were a good fit, but I'm so unhappy with Backpacker in general that I won't even take the free subscription you can get with a membership in the American Hiking Society)

Good idea, though...

Really curious why you are so unhappy with Backpacker? I've read it for years and mostly enjoyed it. Not to nuts about their format in recent years and the advertising is abundant. Then again what magazine isn't loaded with ads.

Joan, Writers Market is a book of over 1100 pages that lists agents and publishers, among other things, with a lot of info on each. I splurged on one last year when they were marked down from $50 to $35. I don't have a 2010, but the websites will be up to date.
Here are some I culled out for you. You can check them online to find their requirements:
National Parks : npca.org/magazine
National Wildlife : nwf.org/nationalwildlife
Outdoor America : iwla.org
Whisper in the Woods : whisperinthewoods.com
Michigan History : michiganhistorymagazine.com
Traverse : mynorth.com
I am assuming the site you wrote about is in Michigan. If not, tell me which state and I'll look
Also consider Inflight magazines put out by the airlines. If you want sites, let me know.
