Cliches?
Ok...I KNOW you're not supposed to use cliches in your writing, but I'm writing kind of a sarcastic, funny-type story, kind of based on fact with
embellishments, and I purposely have some cliches in there. It is written in the first person. I did put some cliches in quotes for effect, which is
probably a no-no, too.
So is this totally wrong?

No, it's not totally wrong. You're supposed to avoid cliches when cliches are not necessary or intended. If cliches are what makes the story, then by
all means, use them.
The point about any of these rules is, you have to know the rules so that you know when you're breaking them, that you're breaking them on purpose,
and that it's okay to break them for what you're doing.
Don't fool yourself though and convince yourself that what you're doing is so different and new that it's okay to break the rules unless it truly is
okay--I mean, there is nothing truly knew in writing. You might not have ever seen it, but I guarantee an agent or editor has--multiple times.
So if cliches are part of the humor and are necessary, then use them. I use cliches in my dialogue sometimes, because sometimes, that's how people
really talk in real life.
Love and stuff,
Michy
