Mel's Silly Twitter Question #273

So, I'm getting into Twitter more, but I am stumped about how to do a particular thing.

User ABC asks a question and puts a hashtag by it.
If I want to answer the question on my wall or whatever it's called, how do I do it?

If I just answer it on my Twitter thingy, no one would know I'm answering their question, right? It's not the type of question I just reply to them.

Example: What does your main character have in his pocket? #writerstuff

How do you answer that to be a part of the 'conversation' or whatever it is on Twitter?

In your email, it likely says 'reply to this' or whatever. That's the easiest way. Otherwise, you can just put their # in your answer.

My email? You get Twitter posts to email?

Ugh!

But thanks.

Melanie, you put @username and then reply--that will post it to their twitter stream, and they'll see it.

I do get emails when someone directly messages me or sends me an @username response or if they retweet me (because RT: @username is a username response).

If you want to answer then directly, just @username, type your response, and if you want to keep it in the #hashtag thread for those who search for all posts related to that tag, just make sure to put the hashtag at the end too.

I use Hootsuite so all my social networking things are on one convenient screen. I did have a gmail account, but I never use it. I use my emails associated with my domain names for this stuff.

If I do the @username thing, does the post appear on my stream or wall or whatever too?

Yes, everything you post appears on your twitter stream, and then when you @someone or RT: someone, it appears on their stream as well as yours--that person has the ability to set HOW it appears on their stream, though, so sometimes it appears where everyone can see it, and sometimes it only appears where they can see it once logged in.

That's why some folks complain of RT and @spam on Twitter--sometimes, people will find popular Tweeters and @ them with a link that has nothing to do with that person, but they are trying to get that person's popularity to cause their fans/followers to click the link too.
