quotation advice

I am working on a pillow tutorial with the top of the pillow in an American flag design. The design has the shape for the blue field, stripes and a star, but I am using old cutter quilts for the fabric. The colors are not patriotic, just what ever scraps of quilts that I had available. In explaining the construction of the flag on the pillow, I need to refer to the blue field, which is not blue. I wrote it as "blue" field all the way through the tutorial. Do I need to have quotations around blue throughout the tutorial, or should I just do it on the first time I use it?

Personally, I think I'd understand it better with the quotes on it each time.

I think the quotes would be distracting.... technically they should be there. If you said the 'blue field area', I would understand that without quotes easily, because that doesn't mean it IS the blue field itself--or is blue itself--but it's the area where the blue field should be. So maybe rewording it to the 'blue field area' or some other terminology similar would eliminate the need for quotes throughout.

Thanks guys. I think I may do a version of both your suggestions. It just seems too monotonous with quotations on each one. Using both "blue" field and blue field area should make it flow a little better.
