Interesting to read both sides of it. I've pretty much decided to offer first books in my series for free, but also feel bad about it. I want to get paid for everything I do.

Free will always benefit authors if they know how to use it. You canít just give away a book and then make the reader do the work to contact you. You have to put your book to work.

ď . . . have to put your book to work.Ē

Explain how this is done, and to what effect. Work has different meanings and your intention, while seemingly lofty and well thought out, eludes me.

Please, do, share.

Yes, I see. Of course.

I too would like to know what can be done to put a book to work. I know some ideas... for example, with Kindle, you can update and change your books as often as you need. So I totally recommend putting the links and titles of all your other books at the end and beginning of all your books previously. Just update the back and front pages with a cut & paste, not a big deal, takes less than an hour one day after the release of a new book. That way, everyone who buys one of your books, they get a link and list of all your other works.

You want information in your book about how to reach you--your website, links to it, and to your social media. Invite people to join a mailing list in your books.

Offer free copies to known book reviewers who manage high-profile blogs, but wait until you have something to offer them--such as your own traffic or a quantity of reviews, etc.

You also can market your book through making sure your formatting looks good and your cover and blurbs are professional and professionally edited.

These ar just some ways I can think of... I'd love to hear more.
