How to talk about time

This seemed right when I wrote it, but now it looks inconsistent. I've started a paragraph discussing a "phone ringing at 3:40 AM"
but then, three paragraphs later, in dialog, I say, "the cops called about two."

Do I need to change the reference to the earlier call to "the cops called around 2:00"?

Nothing like writing a novel to make you feel like you'd fail third grade English.

I would change the first one to: "phone ringing at three forty in the morning...."

I don't use numbers in fiction. For me, those numbers stand out on the page when you're reading and it sort of draws me out of the story, so I try not to use any numbers if it's possible.

Thanks, Michy, that makes sense.

that said, I do think the best way is to make it completely consistent... so whatever you decide, just be sure to keep it the same throughout.

And keep writing!

Yeah, what she said. :)

I seemed to be looking down from an immense height upon a twilit grotto, knee-deep with filth, where a white-bearded daemon swineherd drove about with his staff a flock of fungous, flabby beasts whose appearance filled me with unutterable loathing.

Just keep writing and the good stuff will come.
