Malaprop's to Authors: Please Don't Boycott Us

Malaprop's to Authors: Please Don't Boycott Us

Linda-Marie Barrett, general manager of Malaprop's Bookstore/Café, Asheville, N.C., is sending this open letter to authors who are considering cancelling tour stops in North Carolina to protest the state's new discriminatory law HB2:

Her letter makes sense and is certainly a heartfelt entreaty. I'd hate to see a business like this suffer through no fault of their own, indeed, ironically, after their history of freedom of speech.

An eloquent call, and one I hope will be heard and accepted. If authors are making exceptions for schools and libraries (which they should), bookstores should be added to that exception.

It's not just bookstores being boycotted---musicians are boycotting concerts in the state--but that only hurts the venues....

When it comes down to it, it hurts the state, sure, but it's the individual that gets hurt the most. IMO

I just don't think in this case a boycott is warranted or workable... I'm all for changing the law, but this won't make it happen. The people boycotting can't vote, and the people who have voted can't vote again right now, so... what do they hope will happen?

They hope that they'll get enough people in the state upset enough that they'll force their politicians to walk back from a questionable (at the least) legislation.

Perhaps this strategy will work better:

This is nothing more than "make everyone suffer for the actions/beliefs of some." Gee, we seem to be going backward, not forward.

I seemed to be looking down from an immense height upon a twilit grotto, knee-deep with filth, where a white-bearded daemon swineherd drove about with his staff a flock of fungous, flabby beasts whose appearance filled me with unutterable loathing.

Just keep writing and the good stuff will come.
