Are there any publishers that publish short stories? Or short story collections?

There are TONS of magazines and ezines that publish short stories. Thousands... millions...

Getting a collection of short stories published is - from what I hear - much tougher and generally only happens to big names like Stephen King.

Maybe not thousands or millions, but a lot. Were you being sarcastic? I can't tell. :)

I only know about speculative fiction market lists if you happen to write sci-fi, fantasy, or horror.

If you'll look in the short stories thread on this forum as well as in the paying writing gigs thread on this forum, I try to put up paying short story places.

I will be looking more into short stories too and posting more of them here on the forum.

However, one of the best ways to break into shorts is to look for places accepting shorts for anthologies. You actually end up in a book most of the time.

Keep this in mind though - don't give up 100% of your rights for anthologies, and DO NOT ever PAY a publisher to be in an anthology - they pay you, not the other way around.

:) I meant sarcastic in a good way. Like... duh... of course magazines silly Melanie! kind of sarcastic. I didn't want to say something that was too obvious.

Sorry for the misunderstanding!

Brilliant I am so glad I looked in this part of the forum. What's brilliant? I learned something new... did a search on anthologies and found a whole site about them.

http://www.anthologiesonline.com/index.html

that is a neat idea for short stories, and stories written for these contests that do not win. I think there is a fit for my first contest entry out there, if i ever revise it.

Now, I have at least two stories in anthology books already... published by Xulon Pub. but I didn't get paid. They held a contest and the grand prize winner got paid, but none of the other authors did.

I'm a horror fan, so of course my dream (literally, I'll die if it ever happens) is to be published in Weird Tales, a short story publication based on horror and the macabre.

Both Lovecraft and Bradbury, among many others, got their start with this rag. What a cool deal if they ever end up buying my stuff! :)

I seemed to be looking down from an immense height upon a twilit grotto, knee-deep with filth, where a white-bearded daemon swineherd drove about with his staff a flock of fungous, flabby beasts whose appearance filled me with unutterable loathing.

You can find agents who accept short stories by going to agentquery.com and doing a quick search (on the left) under fiction for short stories. Ninety-five agents are listed under the category.
