email notification

It seems I get an email notification for any new thread in which I have a post. Maybe this is intended in which case read no further, but with other sites I get a notification only when a post is directed specifically to me

Yet I guess the current practice is better than getting no notifications at all:

I don't know of any boards that have it set where it's ONLY if you respond to THAT person. Boards typically don't work that way since you can choose reply and quote someone or reply without quoting someone, etc.

You have to subscribe to a post in order to get an email from it. It's not something that is automatically done. If you clicked on the 'receive an email on reply' you ASKED for those emails.

If you don't want those emails anymore, then unsubscribe from the thread. You subscriptions can be managed in your User Account control area. Click on User Control Panel and then click on the link for Subscriptions. Delete or manage them from there.

Michy thank you for that rundown. Please consider my input as suggestions not criticisms

Of course one might expect email notifications for any post to one's own thread. In case of my posting to an ongoing thread by somebody else I gather from your explanation that clicking "Receive e-mail on reply?" gets me notification for any post following mine. If that's what was intended, then well and good. However, I am seldom interested in following posts not relating to my own because such a thread sometimes continues for several hundred additional posts

In IIDB one recent thread so far has achieved 9,765 replies

Therefore I propose you consider for next housekeeping---as in other such sites--the addition of a "Reply" link at the bottom of each post (in addition to "Profile, " "E-Mail," etc) whereby clickification results in notification only upon response to that post

I do appreciate that algorithm modification is often very difficult and involved, especially in the case of commercial software but I hope you nonetheless find my proposal compelling if not feasible

And you would not have received 9000 emails. You would receive one email, and then, until you visit the thread again, you would not receive another.

There are no intentions of changing the way this works any time in the immediate future, sorry.

Aha Michy so that's how it works, now I'm not so reluctant to clickify that linkification in fear of inundation

Nonetheless if it's at all feasible you might mull over my suggestion involving a "Reply" link; that is to say if I was altogether intelligible, though if not I should be happy to further clarify

"There are no intentions of changing the way this works any time in the immediate future, sorry." But no need to apologize; as I had said, I realize how risky and tedious, no matter how beneficial, is the alteration of an algorithm
