Introducing Factoidz: a factual blogging community for experts

Hi everyone,

I came across this forum while doing some research on writers' communities, and thought you have a great tight-knit community here - so, at the risk of sounding overly self-promotional :) I wanted to introduce the website community I manage.

Factoidz is a social blogging community for experts. The idea is you write concise factual articles about any topic you have an expertise in, whether its parenting, wine tasting, auto maintenance, or fitness training, and your articles are then published to our homepage as well as to micro-communities devoted to those more specific topics.

The site has a fun voting and ranking system where users can allocate a limited number of votes per day to articles they like, and as your articles receive votes, you develop a ranking score as an expert in that article's topic. What we've found is that top-ranked members in various topics really develop a reputation for being experts and people start requesting their advice on a range of questions in that field. It's been an interesting and fun experiment to watch, and one we'd like to continue growing.

Similar to other article sites, we offer a revenue sharing system. Ours is a little different in that it's based on the Google Adsense system - you'll need an Adsense account and then we serve your Google ads on your articles, so you can track your earnings directly using Google's excellent reporting system. We also offer a special incentive to frequent writers, if you write at least once in three days, we serve your ads on 100% of your articles' views, so essentially you keep all the revenues. We think it's only fair since you're providing the most value in your creative and informative contributions to the site.

Our site was launched in late 2008, so we're a fairly new community and are developing constantly. We like to operate in a co-op like fashion where we take in the feedback from our writer's community and try to build to what our community asks for. In that spirit, we're looking to expand our community base and get additional feedback, so I'd like to invite members here on Accentuate to check out our site and provide us your feedback - we love hearing wish-lists, if you could have a writer's community site that did exactly what you wanted, what would that be? We think its the best way to grow a winning community. We look forward to hearing your thoughts and feedback, I'll be listening here on this board for your thoughts.

Thanks for reading, and happy writing!

What makes your site different from Helium, Hubpages or other websites that offer rev. share through Google Adsense?

I should mention also that Helium offers rev share plus upfront payments. I would like to know why I should take my articles to your website instead of one of these other places because I can retain 100% of my adsense revenue earned from on my blogs, receive upfront payments and rev share at others websites and also earn page view bonuses.

Thank you,
Linda

Hi Linda,

Thanks for your response - I think you raise a fair question about compensation. There certainly are other excellent sites out there that offer a range of compensation programs. I won't overpromise and say that we'll pay you more than other sites will - as you know, compensation is complex and varies by author and content type. What I will say is that we will compensate you fairly, give you control and visibility into all of your traffic metrics (we offer an analytics dashboard with detailed real-time stats on all your work), and we work hard to make sure your content ranks well in search engines (as our background is from the major search engines). From an SEO standpoint, we are selective in what we publish (for example, we won't publish 10 articles on the same subject) and we offer free SEO tuning on your articles to ensure your articles receive good search traffic over time, which as many in the industry know leads to the highest converting Adsense traffic.

Another way in which we're different is our focus on topical subjects. Apart from articles, a big part of our site is devoted to topical Q&A discussion channels where people can discuss and interact with others around specific subjects. Many users come to the site to find experts in specific subjects to ask questions. (See our Home Improvement channel as an example: http://factoidz.com/experts-in/home-improvement/). We also analyze the community's feedback to determine in real-time how highly regarded each user in each subject - making it easier to find someone who might be able to answer your question. In fact, many of our writers run businesses that are related to the subjects they participate in, and they use the site as a way to meet new potential clients and customers. It's an interesting pattern which we didn't plan for but we've seen.

So overall, I think that Factoidz competes with the other excellent paid article sites out there - and our focus / differentiation is on A) topical knowledge and discussion, and the benefits of being ranked as a top expert, and B) SEO-ing the heck out of your content and getting you great search traffic. We hope anyone for whom this appeals to comes to check us out.

I may have missed it on the site, but does the content have to be original not previously published? I think I saw in the TOS where it is not exclusive, so a writer could publish elsewhere but I could not find if you could publish an article you already had in print.

Apologies if I read right past it.
