if it's not her looks, what is it?

what, if anything, is special about this girl?

***

On some days, when the winds are playful, dancing through tree tops and gently guiding their fallen leaves here and there, a young girl appears. She is not a remarkable girl nor an extravagantly beautiful girl in any particular sort of way. She is, as most would say, a common girl, a very plain girl. Her hands are small and pale. Her fingers are long, but not extraordinarily so, but just long enough. The skin covering the palm side of her hand are wrinkly, like an aged woman's, but without the depth. Looking at her palms, one would be compelled to conjure an image of soft, but long worn, leather. And if one, if one were so inclined, would look upon her face, they would see nothing of great interest. Although symmetrical in a pleasing sort of way, her face was not a face to spark a feeling of love in others. Nor was it a face that could stir a great fleet of ships to cross the seas as one famous face had before. No, her face was plain. Even her smile, though tender, was not warm enough to command the hearts of men.

I would suggest that faces don't spark feelings of love, but rather, feelings of lust.... on to the question...

evidential traits of the girl (evidential may be a word I just made up, meaning "supported by evidence, although not necessarily representative of the whole picture") include:

love of nature, gratitude, earthly, wiccan, whimsical, spontaneous, humble (more of an inference), frugal, simple... were her hands burnt?

Edit: she lives in the now, she's down to earth

were her hands burnt?

That's exactly what I thought when I read it. I saw a very solemn girl, rather sad in a peacefully resigned sort of way. Something bad happened to her in the past and she has made peace with it in a way that aged her. She likes the wind because it gives her feeling: cold rushing at her face rouses her blood and almost makes her merry. Calm days are too placid.

Just rambling thoughts...

Is this supposed to be someone in particular, or are you looking for character development help?

I'm on board with you. I get the sense of a pleasant young girl. Maybe no super model - but so? What's wrong with average? She seems kind, sweet. You'd expect her to be the sort who'd help a stranger, if she could, and be quick to smile.

I also get the feeling that the narrator is perhaps a little bitter about women in general. Is this a man who's not had such good luck with the ladies? A woman who has been two timed?

Let's say it's a guy. This time, he feels, for some reason, the girl he dates should be prettier than this girl, who he watches walking down the street.

He is critical of everything about her, and yet there is some mysterious quality about her. He cannot take his eyes off of her. He is annoyed, subconsciously, by his own preoccupation with her.

Sounds like someone who has seen many struggles in their life, has worked hard (hence her wrinkled hands), and is an old soul.

Sounds like my friend Jamie, quite honestly! Especially the long fingers and wrinkled hands. She has the hands of a 50 year old woman...but that's b/c she's worked her whole life, even as a child growing up in Argentina then Nepal.

oh hey!

thanks for the responses and sorry for the late reply.

reading through this now, i realize that i don't even care about the girl and was too infatuated with decorating her with pretty words and descriptions.

too flowery.

gross.

don't you guys agree?
