How's NaNoWriMo Going for Everyone?

I'm currently on target for the 50k, but I'm way behind for my own target.

For those doing the math, you should be around 14k right now.

How's everyone doing?

Who needs a boost - a race? a challenge?

Anyone got any ideas to help motivate stragglers?

I'm doing pretty darn awful. I just topped 6k this afternoon. I'm planning to write as much as I can tonight and catch up a wee bit. I'm not worried, and I still dig my story. It seems to be getting off to a slow start, however. I can see lots of editing in my future, but there's nothing new about that.

Feeling a bit down over the amount of help I have to give my father. NOT that I won't help him, but my time is short enough already.

I'm above target right now, sitting at 20k. Yay! I was thinking about working some more tonight to try to get to the next word goal, but I don't know since it's growing late and I'm getting almost too tired to think.

<.< >.> >.< who me? no no... don't ask these things... John forgot how to be funny...and it's killing me. He started getting irritated and angry. He's lost his sense of humor so I'm watching some comedies on cable to find it again.

But I'm up to 7k words or something... still behind but getting there...

I have no idea where the story is going, but I'm having a great time getting there. My next goal is 20K.

ETA: Made it to 20K at 1:30 am; next goal is 25K. But probably not tonight.

Well, honestly, right now I'm doing just plain sucky on my word count! I'm at about 4,000 words. I've had four days in a row that I've been able to do absolutely no writing. I have been playing out some ideas in my head while I've been at the doctor's office, grocery store, church, etc. (Yes, I know I'm supposed to be paying attention the sermon, but my story kept popping into my mind  ).

The rest of the week looks pretty clear on my calendar, though, so I'm planning to do some major catching up. I know I can do it.

A good swift kick in the butt might help, too. ;)

For those struggling like me, might I suggest doing some sprints with "Write or Die?" I've written about half of what I have so far using that program. It forces you to keep writing. I've been doing 500 words at a time. I'm still behind, of course, but at least I'm getting something done.

Yeah, Mel. I might have to give that a shot. I used once before and it did help. :)

Write or Die, or try some word wars. I did a few sessions over the weekend, thirty minutes each, and averaged a little over 1,000 words each time.

So, if you're behind, give that a try! :)

I'm pretty much on track. Just settling in to write some more tonight!

Life has conspired to throw two massive challenges at me at the same time, plus some family strife... such is the way of the world. I'm around 14500 at the moment but time is getting away from me. Mainly because I am trying to complete a huge x-stitch (It's 11" x 14" finished size) of a dragon for a friend's birthday.... due 3rd December! I will not give up easily, but if push comes to shove, NaNo will have to drop back as friend's gift is far more important at this point in time. (Image below is the one I am doing... may have to buy it again to do for myself!)

Good luck to everyone! As I'm a bit of a night owl, if anyone wants to add me on MSN (I can put yahoo contacts on msn if I remember rightly) for cajoling, ranting, giggling chats to boost each other along, drop me a u2u and we can swap contacts =)

I usually write with dragons, but none this time.

I actually run a website with a dragon who lives in my basement. He's from Brooklyn. ;)

It's official. As I promised to myself before, if I finally made it to the how-to team, I'll drop my Nano and focus on getting 50 how-to tasks done for the bonus.

Part of me is sad, but this is something I have to do.

I didn't officially sign up, but was inspired to write a YA love tragedy today. 3500 words came pouring out in about 4 hours. I'm not sure where this one is going and hopefully it won't peter out before its done, like so many others. I will post for critique as soon as it becomes a little more than a flash in the pan.

Jo, if I can catch up and get on track when I started a brand new novel last night, you have no excuses for not doing it on a novel you've started at the beginning!

I know. You are so right. I just don't know what the heck my problem is! I think I need some tough love right now (and heavy on the tough part.) ;)

ETA: Everyone else in my home is in bed right now, so I'm escaping with the laptop (minus the Internet) to start playing catch up on this novel. Way too many distractions for me online!

Why do you think I have these smilies?

First we have to capture you: :smileychickena: and then we will sit you down in your chair and make you write a :2101: . We're not cruel though, so you're welcome to have some :1719x: , as much as you need.

Then, when you're finished, you'll have a book and maybe you'll get a contract: :rules:

So if you need us to, we'll :whip: , but I think you'll enjoy it more if you do it yourself.

Then, when you're done, we can celebrate

Two hours later I'm still staring at the same sentence and realize that I need to do dishes and laundry and study for my classes. This is two days in a row. Any help?

I am in the same boat as Jo,

My word count below is not right, I am at an embarrassing 2000 some odd words.

I underestimated the needs of my family and my Scentsy business. I don't know what the heck is wrong with me. Other than just plain life.

But look how busy Michy is and she wrote part of a Novel, dumped it and is starting a new one.

Ugh. I know I can do it if I just get on the ball.

I took yesterday off. I didn't write a word more on my story than I already had. As a result? I couldn't get it out of my head and spent the entire day wondering which would be the best scene to write next, where I could go with it... Now I feel ready to tackle the second half of my novel. :)

I am muddling through a mucky, miry morass... my plot has imploded, sense has flown out the window, my characters are floundering helplessly. I hear this is normal for week 2.

I haven't written anything in the last 2 days. Nothing. I'm still hoverinig around 10k.

This weekend is catch up time. I cannot lose after three wins. I simply cannot.

I reached 26k today, thanks to more word-warring... so I'm over the halfway line and right on track!

15k to go and I have hit a dead spot... Getting 1667 words out today was almost torture. lol. I had a feeling this would happen during the second half of my writing. I'll do the best I can to work through it. At least I'm six days ahead right now in case this lasts more than a few days.

Novel word counts/goals:
Guardian 1: 15,012/15,000 (met 7-28-09)
24,096/30,000

Morais: 19,601 (on hold)

My novel is going to be WAY longer than 50k. I just hope that once NaNo wraps up, I'll manage to keep writing, rather than going back to edit! Editing is so tempting.

A good novel should be about 60-120k depending on genre and style. For example, a chick lit novel could be as small as 60k while a good sci-fi epic can be as much as 120k. Literary fiction, thrillers, and historical romances and such tend to hover around 80-90k. Mainstream commercial fiction can very widely in word count.

I shoot for about 100k for my rough draft, and I tend to edit that down to about 90-95k at the end.

50k is just too short to be a novel, but it's a fantastic start on a novel.

My very first NaNoWriMo novel that I finished topped out on November 30th at about 78K and the final version of the manuscript, which took two years more to finish and perfect, sits now at about 106k.

It's the one I'm shopping around right now - I just did the synopsis for Kensington...

I'm doing two NaNo novels concurrently this month, and man, oh man, one of them is just flowing... the other is trodding along at a steady pace though.

See, I'm writing a novel for children (middle graders) and my problem is that most kids' novels are less than 50,000 words. I kind of feel like I'm going to be simply tossing in extra words to meet the word count that I have no intention of taking to the final manuscript. I really don't like that.

Michy, two novels? Ugh. I feel like such a loser when I'm struggling to complete one and you're soaring through two of them. :fake sniffle:

(grin) Sowwy....

As for word count - why not finish one novel for kids and then start another?

Actually, 50k is a good word count for a really good tween novel. Think about it, middle schoolers were the ones who really rocketed Lord of the Rings to recent *(again)* fame!

Yeah, I think I'll finish fairly close to that but don't want to come up short of winning simply because the story finishes before 50,000. I never thought about starting a second one, though. I actually do have another story I planned to write once this one is done.

Brilliant, you're brilliant...;)

Now I need to disappear and meet my goal.

Argh! Tonigt while cuttting my avocado, I cut a big chunk out of my finger. My pointer finger. Basically cut off the entire side of my first knuckle. So now it is really really hard to type. I can't use my left pointer at all.

This is seriously going to put a damper on my NaNo. :(
